For our 20 years, this remarkable little town is the place where ALL of our first graders can have fun and learn safety over the course of a morning field trip.
Our kiddos make the trip to learn about safety of all kinds-- being safe at home, on the sidewalk, on your bike, in the woods, on the bus- you name it!
We are so grateful to Huntsville Rotary for this gift to our community, and everyone- including our students- who lend a helping hand to teach our students!
This is definitely a one of a kind Huntsville ISD learning tradition, and many of the people that are there as teachers were once visiting as first graders!
Thank you to all of our participants- of course we could not do it without you!

However, our teachers and campuses come up with ways to get our students prepared in the classroom and out– like over at Huntsville Elementary School, who hosted their annual Rock the STAAR Run at Huntsville ISD!
Students walk over to the sound of rock music, then run the length of the field and make a loop around the track!
It’s a way to burn off some energy and get the wiggles out!
We spotted Coach Stewart and Coach Moebes greeting the students, along with members of the Sam Houston Track Team and of course– the Huntsville Elementary Teachers and Staff! Yes, some teachers DID in fact join in the run!
Good luck everybody— Do your Best, Show What You Know and Sting ‘em Hornets!

Huntsville ISD’s Coach Jason Elliott was recently recognized as the recipient of the 2026 Gulf South Summit Outstanding Community Partner Award. As Huntsville ISD’s Adapted Physical Education teacher, Coach Elliott serves as the community partner at the heart of Sam Houston State University’s Adapted Physical Activity Project, one of the longest-standing academic community engagement course partnerships at SHSU.
We’re proud to share photos from both the recent award presentation and this long-standing partnership in action!
For the past 17 years, Huntsville ISD students have traveled to the SHSU campus for weekly activity sessions each semester, where they connect with students in SHSU’s KINE 4369: Adapted Physical Activity course at the SHSU Recreation Center.
This lasting collaboration gives SHSU kinesiology students valuable hands-on experience while creating meaningful opportunities for Huntsville ISD students.
Congratulations to Coach Jason Elliott on this well-earned recognition, and thank you to Dr. Min Kim, and all the people at The Community Engagement Center at Sam Houston State, along with Coach’s teaching team at Huntsville ISD, for making this happen!!
Everyone is an athlete!

Big Art Day is an opportunity for Texas public schools to do exactly that — go BIG on art!
When we stopped by Huntsville Elementary School, art teacher Ariann Bunker, along with her fellow Specials teachers, had transformed the gym (with a big assist from the coaches!) into a full-blown art festival.
After a brief introduction to the day, students — 5th graders during our visit — were turned loose to create for art’s sake.
They had the opportunity to work with clay, make art trading cards, head outside for chalk drawing, or contribute to a giant free-draw mural. It didn’t matter what they created, as long as they created.
Pretty awesome? We thought so.
