SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) is a school board advisory group of individuals who represent different segments of the community. The HISD SHAC is made up of parents, community members, students and school staff working together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs.

Mission & Vision

Mission Statement

The mission of the Huntsville Independent School District School Health Advisory Council is to advocate health and wellness throughout the HISD community.  We will strive to ensure that all school-age children have healthy bodies and minds through sequential health education, appropriate health practices, and modeling of good health behaviors.

Vision

All Huntsville Independent School District students will reach their full personal, physical, psychological, and academic potential.

HISD Student Health Advisory Council Members 

SHAC is currently seeking new members.  

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the health education program. The council will address the continued implementation of a coordinate health program including health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, healthy school environment, staff health promotion and family/community involvement. The SHAC meets at least 4 times during the school year.

SHAC FAQ's

What is SHAC? 

SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) is a school board advisory group of individuals who represent different segments of the community. The HISD SHAC is made up of parents, community members, students and school staff working together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs. 

Why do we need a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)?

  • It's a Texas Law

  • Healthy children learn better

  • Schools play an important role in teaching healthy habits

  • Healthy homes and healthy schools support healthy children

What is included in a coordinated school health program (CSHP)?

  • Family and community involvement

  • Nutritional services

  • Physical education

  • Health education, counseling, and social services

  • Health services

  • Healthy school environment

  • Health promotion for school staff

What does a Health Education Program include?

  • Planned curriculum for K-12 grades that addresses the physical, mental emotional and social aspects of health

  • Curriculum that can motivate and assist students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease and reduce health related risk behaviors

  • Opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate health related knowledge, practices and attitudes

  • Qualified teachers, counselors and health professionals
