Hall of Champions Nomination Information & Criteria

HISD accepted nominations for the inaugural Hall of Champions during the 2023 spring semester.  Nominations were considered by a selection committee and then chosen for induction during the fall semester.  Honorees were notified and invited to the last scheduled district home game for the induction ceremony and celebration. This inaugural class also accompanied the team captains on the field prior for the official coin toss before the game.  HISD Superintendent Dr. Scott Sheppard made the official induction with a plaque presentation to each inductee down on the field between the first and second quarter of the game.

Purpose:
In keeping with the commitment of Building Champions, the Hall of Champions is intended to acknowledge the outstanding lifetime achievements of former Huntsville Hornets in a variety of categories. The honor reflects personal and professional accomplishments, as well as larger contributions to our society at the local, state, national, or international level.  Honorees are role models and represent Champions in life - the “best of the best” among Hornet Alumni, former HISD employees and former HISD trustees.

Qualifications:
The qualifications for nominees are 1) Graduate of Huntsville High School at least 15 years ago; OR 2) Former HISD employee or trustee whose contributions left a lasting impact on the community; AND 3) Accomplished outstanding lifetime achievements as described in the purpose statement above. to The Huntsville ISD Hall of Champions qualifications and nomination form can be found on the Huntsville ISD website under the Community tab.  The nomination process is rigorous and thorough, requiring a lot of information on each nominee including a letter of nomination, current resume and/or brief biological narrative to explain the nominees accomplishments as well as two or more letters of recommendation. The nomination window will open each spring semester and the individuals who are selected for induction will be notified and celebrated during a ceremony at a Huntsville Hornet home football game the following fall.

Joreen Kelly Waddell with plaque

Joreen Kelly Waddell
Alumni / former Nurse & Teacher

Joreen Waddell was born and raised in Huntsville, Texas. Her early years of education started at the historic Samuel Walker Houston Elementary, followed by her attendance at Scott Johnson Jr. High, and in September of 1965 Joreen made history.  She was one of the first 11 African-American students to integrate the segregated classrooms of Huntsville High School. After graduation, she was accepted into the Joe G. Davis School of Nursing, where she obtained her LVN and later her Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). Her nursing goals did not stop there as she continued her journey to help heal others by applying and being accepted into The University of Texas at Arlington. While there her desire and determination to succeed, paved her way to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After becoming a Registered Nurse (RN), she quickly began working in Huntsville and the surrounding areas lending not only aid but education to the community. In the years that passed, Joreen went on to acquire her teaching certification from Sam Houston State University. This decision led the Huntsville native back to her roots and in February of 1992, she officially returned to HHS, only this time as the school nurse. Two years later, she transitioned into the classroom, teaching the youth of Huntsville High School the fundamentals of nursing, heading a course titled Health Science Technology. In 2004, she started the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Pharmacy Tech Programs at HHS which resulted in hundreds of students graduating with their respective industry based certifications which helped set them up for success in both the workforce and in college. After a lengthy 28-year career with HISD, Joreen retired from teaching but never from HHS. She still remains a loyal and diehard Hornet even today as you can find her frequently in the classroom as a substitute teacher or in the nearest Hornet Nation ticket booth servicing the many HHS sporting events.

Joreen is the proud mother of three boys Efrem (deceased), Derf, and Dewayne and one daughter VeShon. She serves as a lifetime member at Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she holds several positions; one being the Head Drill Team Director. Joreen is also a member of the Huntsville, TX Alumnae Chapter of the distinguished Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.  All in all, Joreen Waddell is a prestigious and well known name in the Huntsville Community. For those who have had the opportunity to know and learn from her have not only been given great instruction but gained a mentor who is always willing to build, teach, and guide you into becoming the champion you are!
